Students from across Leeds got a glimpse of what the construction industry can offer in a recent visit to our Yeadon HQ.
Almost 30 pupils from St Mary's in Menston, Guiseley, Horsforth and Benton Park secondary schools formed part of the launch of National Construction Week (6th - 13th October) which aims to address recruitment issues faced by construction industry.
The students were shown videos and had an opportunity for some hands on experience in our joiners shop with representatives of Promoting Construction West Yorkshire, Leeds College of Building and the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB ConstructionSkills) on hand to deliver presentations.
National Construction Week (NCW) is the UK wide not-for-profit campaign which gives young people the opportunity to experience the wide range of exciting opportunities available in the industry and boost interest in careers within construction.
One of the students, fifteen-year-old Dominic Meredith, commented: "I thought it was really helpful to see the type and range of opportunities that exist in construction and I enjoyed it. There was a lot of information to take in."
Another student, Joel Crivin (15), said "I learnt a lot about how to go about getting on a course and it was a very useful experience."
Steve Ellmore was delighted by the day's activities: "This is now becoming a regular event at Ellmore and National Construction Week is an initiative that we are fully committed to getting involved in.
"The students all seem to enjoy the experience and it has provided ourselves with a rich source of recruitment having taken on a number of apprentices as a direct result of the visits," added Steve.
Promoting Construction West Yorkshire (PCWY) - of which Ellmore is one of the founding members - is an independent training group established in May 2003 in response to the regional boom in construction and associated skills shortage. PCWY promotes the construction industry as an attractive career option and ensures that standards are maintained with the availability of training courses and employee development. |
